What is the Incredible Years (Ireland) Study?
The Incredible Years Ireland Study (IYIS) is an important collaborative research project between the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM) and Archways. The research was commissioned by Archways with funding from the Atlantic Philanthropies. The study is being led by Dr Sinéad McGilloway (Principal Investigator) of the Department of Psychology, NUI Maynooth. Dr McGilloway's team includes a highly skilled group of 7 on-the-ground full- and part-time researchers, as well as a multidisciplinary team of 6 academic experts from NUI Maynooth (Dept of Psychology, Dept of Education and Dept of Economics), Bangor University Wales, Trinity College Dublin, and Queen's University Belfast. This study is a unique collaborative venture between a university and a community-based organisation. The study is also the first national evaluation of its kind in Ireland and one of only three evaluations that have been conducted, to date, in Europe.

How is the research being undertaken?
The study is a longitudinal follow-up research project incorporating three Randomised Control Trials of (1) the BASIC Parent training; (2) the Teacher Classroom Management training; and (3) a combination of parent, teacher and child training respectively. Parents and teachers will be required to complete questionnaires regarding children’s behaviour at baseline (i.e. before any intervention occurs), and outcomes will be analysed at 6-months and 12-months post intervention. An on-the-ground project team of highly trained researchers, based at NUI Maynooth are conducting the detailed data collection.

What will happen to the results of the research?
The research will be written up in report format and may be published in journals and presented at national and international conferences.

Will the research be kept confidential?
Yes, all information that is collected during the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential. No names will be identified at any time. All information will be securely held at NUI Maynooth and is not available to anyone outside the research project.

Who has approved this study?
The study has received ethical approval from the NUI Maynooth Ethics Committee.
